Devizes really punches above it’s weight in terms of its cultural and musical events all year round. Whether you’re only in town for the DOCA Street Festival on the bank holiday in August, the all year round events from Hillworth Park, Sheer Music or Long Street Blues club or the 3 week period of Devizes Festival proper, you are guaranteed high quality acts, venues and organisers.
This years Devizes Festival have already cooked up a programme that’s set to beat 2014’s, which had the unenviable task of clashing with the World Cup, a never ending recession and sickness to their Chairman.
Naturally 2015 promises a lot of opportunity to create and inspire, and the first 3 events announced on the Devizes Festival website have done just that.
First of all we see the return of the fan favourite, Music and Food event – last seen in 2013 when, Sarah Savoy of the Francadians delivered a home spun Jambalaya recipe to Peter Vaughan of the Bistro, weeks in advance of their show. Peter recreated the dish and as sponsor gave a portion to every ticket holder who came in through the door.
The beautifully executed event of shared experiences, good music and great food returns on Friday 19th June at the Corn Exchange when Peter Vaughan, again as sponsor, provides authentic Mexican food for our authentic Mariachi band, Mariachi El Mexicano. Once again the food is provided within the ticket price. Even at this early stage it is expected to sell well, so mark that date in your calender and snap your ticket up in advance.
The second event continues the festivals strong relationship with international, quality live music when talented American bluegrass band, The Railsplitters come and perform on Monday 8th June, also at the Corn Exchange.
Lastly the first Fringe event has been announced. This year, what with the Twinning Weekend 12-14th June, the festival have decided to focus their free Fringe events across the same weekend, utilising the towns smaller, much loved intimate spaces.
On Friday 12th June we have been treated with the return of Chap Hopper, Professor Elemental who is set to perform in the old Bear fighting fit at the Cellar Bar. Upon being told of this fact, the Professor exclaimed “…you have made my day. I am definitely going to buy a bear mask and make someone wrestle me. It’ll be fantastic, or at least memorable.” If that doesn’t suggest the fun that is going to be had, nothing will.
On line tickets this year will be provided by TicketSource, which gives you the ability to chose your seating at applicable events. Along with their box office which again will be found in Devizes Books.
You are encouraged to keep up to date and get involved with the Festival by following them on Twitter @DevizesFestival or using the hashtag #DevizesFestival on Instagram and across social media.
There are more exciting events to be released in due course, the Comedy and Poetry shows are always a popular draw, and there promises to be two further extremely exciting live music shows to be announced, not to mention the rest of the Fringe, Cafe Sci, Classical and Theatre events, an updated, twisted version of the Teenage Showcase and a brand new event, never seen in the Festival before.
We are super excited about this years programme, it set to be one of their best years yet!
