Spotting an opportunity in his tour schedule, we pinged him a message and voilà, here he is. John in all his eccentric, double-necked-guitar, Old Grey Whistle Test, Headbutt glory.
A text book example of how to have fun, and not take yourself too seriously, his autobiography is subtitled “Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure”.
Now it seems crass after the passing of David Bowie to call John Otway a legend, but he has managed to survive since 1972’s debut single, without ever having any major commercial success. Which means he deserves credit for a reputation built solely on his live performance.
Making this gig an absolute must see, we’ve seen the tech-spec and have been promised a Theremin. A Theremin. The only person I have ever seen wield such a device live (and in Devizes) was a young James Devine (or possibly Dan Pratt…?) at The bell By The Green in 2005-ish.
Tickets are on sale now, priced £12 and limited to just 60. This will be a proper intimate gig.
