10 years ago today, on a Monday night around Easter, Devizes played host to *another* one of our gigs. All of the gigs I do are special, but at the time I didn’t foresee the significance of this particular show.
It was my first one with Frank Turner, who was also on his first solo tour, opening for Gabby Young & The Other Animals, a local to Swindon act and at the time stalwart of the scene. (this is covered in his book, Road Beneath My Feet). I was just delighted to have one of my heroes playing for me, after trying to negotiate a gig for months, and being beaten to the punch by Trowbridge, where Frank played the old Terry’s Nightclub.
We could have chosen anyone to support, but none of our local bands seemed appropriate, and at any rate, Ben had done quite a few shows for me by this point, and I felt it was a real opportunity to offer a really good support slot.
I’d had always loved Ben’s music. His awkward / brilliant turn of phrase, awkward brilliant stage presence and that awkward shuffle he did with his feet when he played. I never did quite figure out how he did it, but I had always believed in him. Plus it’s nice to do shows with friends.
10 years later, that night meant a great deal, as Frank also saw something in Ben too. A couple of more gigs for me in Devizes and Swindon and a another support for Ben in Aldershot further cemented that friendship, and the rest they say is history.
So to celebrate this past decade of US tours and Olympic stadiums, I invited Nathan Hamley a local illustrator, film maker and occasional band member to design something, the results are above.
We’re having this made up into a limited edition screen print poster, being hand crafted by Frome based company, I Dress Myself, using eco-friendly black ink, on Woodland Wove 280 gsm natural A3 white paper.
Printing commences Monday, and we will be aiming to ship Saturday 9th / Monday 11th April.
Profit from these prints are being donated to Devizes based Charity, Rowdeford school. For two reasons – their music & sensory department (and school in general) is always looking to raise money, but also because 2 or 3 years ago, we had a failed attempt to host an inclusive Day-Festival in their grounds. It suffered ridiculous rainfall, swamping the whole school. This is my way of paying back their loss.
You can buy these posters from the Xtra Mile store HERE, priced £15+ p&p. The first poster is being framed and placed in the venue, The Bell By the Green, Devizes for posterity and talking points. Expect a Gazette article etc in due course!
Thank you again, everyone past, present and to the future people who come, which make our scene so interesting and such an incredible place to play!
