You can lead a Horse to water…. Underage Music Month

For the past decade I’ve largely concerned myself with the youth of Devizes & Wiltshire – Mostly in a Jo Whiley “suck their energy and stay young” type of way, but as I have passed the threshold of 30, it’s becoming much more of a struggle to remain on the level of an aloof teenager and harder still to tell them why they should take an interest in their local music scene – You’re either interested or your not.

Thus, today I’m passing on a message;

April is Underage Music Month and BBC Introducing in the West is on the look-out for the most creative young musicians in the area.

If you’re under 18 years old and making music then please email underagemusicmonth@bbc.co.uk or tweet us @bbcintrowest using the hashtag #underagemusicmonth. Or maybe you know someone who’s being creative with music, but not getting the recognition they deserve? Richard and I (Sam Bonham) want to find the most creative young musicians in the West Country throughout April.

It’s another way to get involved, and a relatively straight forward one too, so join in. I hope those of you who saw our tweets, entered the Larmer Tree Festivals competition too, good luck to those that did.

SHOWCASE

If you’re Wiltshire based and looking for gigs, you could do yourself a favour and drop Abe Juggins an email – He is currently booking a series of gigs on Fridays in May at The Bell By The Green, in aid of the Devizes Showcase. It’s filling up, but there are spaces. Check out the Sheer Music Facepage for more information. I’ve seen the festival brochure, and he get’s a lovely mention.

GILBERT & SULLIVAN!

Not that I’m even remotely bothered by my age (I stress that I’m not again, despite the constant commentary…) but  there is something quite cool about the idea of singing Gilbert & Sullivan. If you feel the same way, well then GOOD NEWS, White Horse Opera are looking for chaps to sing. A wry smile to anyone who thought of Sideshow Bob attempting to murder Bart Simpson, at the mention of Gilbert & Sullivan, but if that is what it takes….

Drop Barbara Gompels an email and offer your services!

We do have some great news to announce in due course, regarding our 10 year anniversary show, local awards, Devizes Festival and more – just keep reading!

Devizes festival Battle Of The Bands

For the 7th year running, I will be presenting the Devizes Festival Showcase event, where we get the best up and coming acts in the area, and whack them all in the Corn Exchange, across multiple stages. This year however, I am handing over the organising, booking and running duties to the excellent ABE JUGGINS, who has been on of the best, most reliable promoters in the area for some time.

We are super excited to announce that this years Showcase event will be a 3 stage affair, and FREE ENTRY.

The top floor of the venue will be curated by me, via THE LAMB. The main hall stage head lined by our much loved, and well know Marlborough guests, THE VOOZ, which is sponsored by THE WAREHOUSE STUDIOSWhile in the basement, curated by Abe Juggins and sponsored by DNA we have guest head liners, BAND HEADCOUNT

The way the stages and battle works out, is fairly straight forward. Abe is running a clutch of shows throughout Fridays in May at The Bell By The Green. Each show will be booked with 4 or 5 new bands from in and around the area. If you wish to play any of these gigs, drop Abe Juggins a message.

Each heat, gives one “audience voted”, band to the final at the Corn Exchange on Friday 13th June, with the rest of the bill being hand picked from bands who have played our various gigs for the past 6 months.

We basically want a good quality, entertaining line up, which you have some say over as a participating audience member!

You can find out everything else, including line ups etc over on Facebook (obviously…) facebook.com/events/729852800379732/

2 ex-Devizes boys return with new bands!

Some exciting news for the Devizes Festival showcase gig in June, since we will be welcoming back the legend that is BEN HOOPER and his new band, Ghosts As Alibis >as seen on Facebook< – One for your post hardcore, avent garde, experimental nuts and the more recent, MICHAEL BARHAM  in his rock band Old Crows. >Facebook em’ here<

Both these bands represent what this event is about – we have given people support, gigs and experience over the years, and have the most exciting platform to welcome them back with their established bands and sounds.

Old Crows, cite as far ranged influences as Jamiroquai, Stone Sour and Rise Against, while Ghosts As Alibis give Deftones, Cult Of Luna and  Mars Volta as their influences. Eclectic .

The show will be head lined on my stage, by an exciting soon-to-be-announced head liner, I can’t give the game away just yet, but you’ve seen him around these parts before, and he’s is very well respected!

Check out GHOSTS AS ALIBIS below…

First supports added to Devizes showcase…

BOOM and there goes the dynamite.

Abe Juggins has announce the first two local acts opening up at the DEVIZES SHOWCASE, and they will be, still-so-new-they-only-just-released-their-first-demo metal band ORCRYST (see below for said demo…) and a band who’ve been around for a while, but gone through so many ups and downs and changes, they’re practically a new band… ROADS TO NOWHERE. Knowing that’s how that stage is shaping up, is pretty sick. It’s going to be heavy!

With me in the main hall, I have announced Trowbridges finest, NATHAN DETROIT – who have had one of the best 12 months of any band, given their recent supports of Rat Attack, Gnarwolves and As We Sink! and delivering their first proper self titled EP. I also have the pleasure to confirm, after their incendiary performance at The Lamb last Friday, THE CITY LIGHTS will be all over this. It would be silly to miss out a band with such talent and performance ability. Already a hit on Fantasy radio, and following in the footsteps of Jon Amor and Bite The Buffalo, I’m tipping them for a fantastic next 12 months.

Tickets are £6 available from Devizes books from May the 1st, you can catch most of these bands in and around Devizes, so check them all out.

BEANS ON TOAST head lines Corn Exchange

I am super-duper happy to tell you that, after his gut busting performance at The Lamb back in December, BEANS ON TOAST will be returning to Devizes to head line the – all age event – the Devizes Festival Showcase gig on June 14th.

Beans On Toast aka Jay McAllister who is now a popular staple, at pretty much every UK festival – will be performing in Devizes again, this time in the towns largest and cleanest venue, the Corn Exchange, Ceres Hall – main stage, supported by a cluster of local talent.

Jay spent the latter part of 2012, touring the UK before embarking out into Europe at the start of 2013. He released his 4th album, Fishing For A Thank You, via Xtra Mile (home of Frank Turner, Reuben, Chris TT etc) and is set to once again cement his place in the hearts and consciousness of the UK music scene.

With a June that also includes a New Model Army show, we’re looking like serious contenders for a bit of national recognition!

Beans will pull on his own, even without the local showcase, so I expect this gig to be busy – Tickets are priced at £7 – available from the 1st May via WeGotTickets (with booking fee) or the downloadable booking form (without fee) or in person at Devizes Books.

Dead Note Attire sponsor stage at Devizes Showcase

Devizes based clothing apparel Dead Note Attire, created and run by Homeland.‘s Ash Clark, will be sponsoring a stage at the Devizes Festival Showcase event on June 14th.

DNA will be sponsoring the second stage, which is being booked / programmed by Abe Juggins  and will feature the heavier bands. Special guest head liners will be, Aldershot based punk/metal band, XII Boar.

Merch will be available at the event, but Homeland won’t be playing – You can catch Homeland though, on Friday April 26th at the Bell By The Green, opening for London based legends, PALEHORSE.

Devizes Showcase – We Need New Bands…

Updates will be coming thick and fast over the new few weeks – I have a lot to get through, day by day…

Today I am requesting FRESH NEW BANDS to step forward and take part in the Devizes Festival Showcase. This years event finishes at the Corn Exchange on Friday 14th June – head lined downstairs by XII Boar – We have an upstairs head liner – which will be announced shortly.

The build up dates this year are, Fridays throughout May;

Friday 10th – Metal Night via Abe Juggins…

Friday 17th –

Friday 24th –

Fridat 31st – Indie night – w/ NoFunClub >Facebook event page<

We are looking at 4 to 5 bands per night, for half hour sets. I have an in house drum kit to keep change overs quick, and kit share simple – We’re looking for a variety of bands, though preferably fresh new, inexperienced people or people who are local but haven’t played here before – Get in touch, we want to know about you – we want to give you the opportunity to play live!

Level and ability isn’t an issue, drop us a line and we’ll give you the support you need, and the opportunity you crave.
